One of the Douglas High girls' soccer programs most prolific scorers of all-time will be taking her act to the Bay area for college. Again.
Ally Freitas, who at 55 career goals ranks second on the Lady Tigers' record book behind Morgan LeFever (56), signed a letter of intent to play soccer for the Division II San Francisco State Gators next season. LeFever signed with San Francisco's Academy of Arts University last spring and was a team captain for the Urban Knights last fall.
Freitas had garnered attention from Nevada and Hawaii during the recruiting process but decided on San Francisco State because of the academic programs and the proximity to home.
"It's not too far away," she said. "They have a good team, they did quite well last year. I went down and practiced with them, and it seemed like a good fit.
"Ever since I was little, I wanted to continue as far as I could go with soccer. The whole recruiting process was kind of stressful, just trying to figure out where I wanted to go. There were some times where it felt a little hopeless, but it really works out. There are so many options out there, if you really want to continue to play, there is a school out there for everyone."
Freitas will be playing center forward for the Gators. At Douglas, she scored 29 goals and tabbed eight assists as a senior and put in 55 goals and 15 assists for her career. She was a four-year starter and served as team captain for the last three seasons.
Coaches around the Sierra League named her the league's midfielder of the year last season and placed her on the first-team all-league squad for the past two seasons.
San Francisco State is coming off an appearance in the NCAA Division II National Tournament. The Gators went 12-7-3 overall in 2008 and 10-3-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, which was good enough for first place in the conference's North division.
"We just started talking to the coach and sent them some film," Freitas said. "Kelsey Conklin's mom, Debby, put together a film for me, and it turned out very nice. I went down there to work out with them and everything seemed like a great fit."
Freitas said she is looking at the school's pre-medicine, biology and education programs, all of which rank near or at the top nationally.
"I'll narrow it down once I get there," she said.
She carries a 4.29 GPA at Douglas, was listed on the all-state academic soccer and basketball teams for the past two seasons and is the president of the Block D letterman's club at the high school.
