Baseball: Douglas hands Reno first loss

The top-ranked Reno High baseball team had gone per fect through 16 games, including two against Douglas, this season before the Tigers brought that to an abrupt end Wednesday after noon at in Minden.


Douglas pounded out a 9 0 win over the Huskies in game two of a doubleheader to hand Reno its first loss of the season. Reno won the first game of the day 7-6 in eight innings.


"It was good to get a win away from these guys," Douglas coach John Glover said. "They're obviously a good team and we were hop ing for good games today. " Senior Tyler Hoelzen threw a gem against the vaunted Huskies lineup in game two, scattering four hits, none of which went for extra bases, in seven innings while striking out nine and walking one.


He also went 3-for-3 with a run scored at the plate.


Michael Whalin went 2-for 3 with three RBIs, Tyler May hit a solo home run to deep center, Beau Davis had a pair of RBIs and Tim Rudnick, Troy Torres and Brett Anderson each drove in a run.


Douglas put five runs across in the bottom half of the first inning and never looked back.
