The Douglas High boys' golf team took fifth at the Sierra League Tournament in Fallon earlier this week as three players made their varsity debuts for the Tigers.
"It's always hard over spring break to keep kids here for golf tournaments," Douglas coach Brent Eddy said. "It is a great opportunity for the younger kids to get some experience at the varsity level."
Douglas finished with a team score of 466.
"This is a moral victory for us," Eddy said. "We had to stay in the top five this week to keep our lead over South Tahoe for the fourth zone spot."
Junior Thomas Wicker won the tournament with a one-over 73.
"He was somewhat disappointed knowing if he putted better, he would have finished with another below-par round," Eddy said. "He had another great day. It was a challenge for him because he was in the same group as Manogue's Jordan Anderson, who finished second with a 74.
"Anderson was three-under with six holes left. For Thomas to overcome Jordan's lead and win the tournament was an impressive accomplishment."
Wicker maintained his overall season lead in the Sierra League Cup standings with 291 points while Carson's Jonathan Singer is second with 248 and Anderson is third with 231.
Trevor Wentz shot a 92 for Douglas, Logan McNeil had a 98, Cody Logan shot a 100 and Cooper Brockhage shot a 103.
Fallon won the team tournament on its home course with a 402, Manogue (408) was second, Carson (433) was third and South Tahoe (464) was fourth.
