The other day, I opened a cupboard in my laundry room and instead of finding what I was looking for, was treated to a shower of sorts as the contents overloading the shelves tumbled out.
Amongst all the clutter were a couple of old cell phones I've been meaning to recycle. Tucked away in that cupboard, they're an easy thing to forget.
Fortunately, the Soroptimists of Carson Valley have teamed up with Computer Corps of Carson City to sponsor an electronics recycling day Saturday. The eCycle is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Nevada State Bank in Minden. Computers, monitors, printers, copiers, fax machines, toner and ink cartridges, software, stereos and even those old cell phones can be dropped off for recycling. Televisions will not be accepted. For tax purposes, you will receive a receipt detailing your recycled items.
Computer Corps is primarily a volunteer-based organization dedicated to providing access to computer technology and skills training for under-serviced families, while eliminating electronic waste from our nation's landfills. Volunteers receive credits for their work, which may then be used to acquire computers, software, printers, repairs and/or training.
Donated computers that can be refurbished have their hard drives wiped to Department of Defense standards before being reinstalled with up-to-date software. Obsolete models are disassembled and recycled.
Nevada State Bank is at 1656 Highway 395 in Minden. For information, contact Karen Winters at 782-7933 or Computer Corps at 883-2323. You can also go to www.computercorps.org to learn more about their Every Home a Classroom program, volunteers and the upcoming kids' TechCamp 2K9.
Ranchos Walking Club
Looking for a new way to work some exercise into your schedule? Resident Kerry Miller has just formed a morning walking group in the Gardnerville Ranchos. She started the group after hearing several friends say they enjoy walking, but prefer not to do it alone.
The group meets 7 a.m. Monday-Thursday at the Lyell Way entrance to Aspen Park in the Ranchos. Miller has already determined several walking routes that range in time and distance. Outings include warm-up and cool-down exercises.
"Anyone who wants to get a little more fit should come and join us," she said.
For information, call Kerry Miller at (775) 790-3713.
