Lehi Toskin, a local Boy Scout in the Pine Nut District, is organizing a hair collection drive for the nonprofit organization Locks of Love for his Eagle Scout project. Locks of Love provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. They meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. The prostheses they provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.
Lehi's friend, Bailey Piper, a Douglas High School senior, has been battling deadly bone cancer and has endured many sessions of chemotherapy. The cancer nearly killed her, but she beat it with the help of the chemo, which also nearly killed her. She is a fighter, and is nearly cured, thank God, but she has lost all of her hair. Lehi has organized the hair drive in Bailey's name to have wigs made for youths like Bailey who have lost their hair to cancer or other diseases.
The drive will go for two weeks through Saturday May 2. If you had been thinking of cutting your hair for the summer (10 inches or longer in a ponytail is best), you can go to the Great Clips in Gardnerville located at 1329 Highway 395, Suite 18, in the Scolari's shopping center, or any other salon that supports Locks of Love. The stylists will cut your hair for free with the donation. When you fill out the donation paper, please add "In Honor of Bailey Piper" at the top.
