The Douglas County Senior Center be closed Aug. 17-21 for repairs, but will operate with limited services at Carson Valley United Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Lane in Gardnerville.

Lunch will be served daily at the church on Aug. 17-21. Please do not arrive before 11:30 a.m.

TRE lunch service will be canceled that week. Rides to town may be scheduled with Susan on regular TRE days. Homemaker services and Meals On Wheels will continue as usual. Call the direct line at 783-6456 for DART-related information.

Ceramics and other classes that meet at the senior center will be canceled or moved during that week. See group instructors for details.

During a recent safety inspection, it was found that repairs were needed to the senior center's carpet and the north ramp.

Repairs are being made possible through donations from Commissioner Mike Olson and from the fundraising efforts of the Young at Heart senior citizens group.


August events at the senior center:

Young at Heart senior citizens club hosts a silent auction as a fundraiser for Meals on Wheels. Silent auction items include a three-piece pine entertainment center with glass inserts made by Ducks Unlimited, a 48-inch HDTV 1080 series Mitsubishi television and an electric wheelchair.

Bidding ends noon Monday at the Douglas County Senior Center, 2300 Meadow Lane in Gardnerville. Private bids are made in the senior center office, with the highest bids posted daily. Call 783-6455 for updates.

Barbecue rescheduled. The Douglas County Senior Center's summer luau barbecue has been rescheduled to Aug. 12 at the senior center. Music, games, food and entertainment by the Reno Hula Dancers.

The Crafters Corner group craft project is 1:30 p.m. Aug. 13 at the senior center. This month's project is a tropical wind chime.

The final presentation of the community assessment presentation is 7 p.m. Aug. 13 in the CVIC Hall in Minden. The presentation involves senior needs, service and facilities in Douglas County. DART Dial-a-Ride transportation will run late to accommodate seniors who wish to attend.

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and Western Nevada College host free workshops on basic nutrition, living within your means, living wills, power of attorney, scams and preventing theft and other subjects, 10 a.m. to noon Monday and Wednesday through Aug. 19, at the extension office on Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville. This month's day at the movies on Aug. 24 is to see the 1967 movie "In the Heat of the Night" starring Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger.

Shuttle bus departs the senior center at 8:30 a.m. for the showing at the Fandango in Carson City. The free trip includes a bag lunch. Popcorn and refreshments available for purchase. Sign up at 783-6455.

An excursion to Senior Fair Day at the Nevada State Fair in Reno is Aug. 28. Bus departs the senior center at 8:30 a.m. and returns by 4 p.m. Cost of $15 includes transportation, fair entrance and box lunch. Limited spaces available. Sign up at 783-6455.

Silver yoga 10-10:45 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the senior center. Cost is $2 per class. Information, Chris, 790-6373.
