Two instances involving nine young people doing the right thing are being recognized this week.
On Thursday, the people who rescued 17-year-old Kevin Telles from the East Fork of the Carson River will be recognized by Douglas County commissioners for their quick thinking.
Telles and his friends were swimming near the old power dam on the day before graduation when the 17-year-old got pulled down by the river's strong undercurrent.
His friends found him downstream 50 yards and pulled him from the river.
Dylan Downs, Richard Garcia, Robert Schwoerer, Stephen Pieters, Kendra Blumm, Joseph Lozano and Tyler Kowalski immediately began CPR, and by the time medics took over, Telles was alive, though barely.
The two brothers who spotted a man lying in the brush after being hit by a car on July 22 are receiving less formal recognition, but they deserve recognition nonetheless.
It was well after dark when Miguel and Jose Pina spotted Cayle Hanson lying by the side of Centerville Lane. Hanson had been lying there for 30-40 minutes after being hit by an SUV or a pickup truck.
If not for the Pinas' sharp eyes, Hanson might not have survived until someone did see him.
We offer our thanks to all of these young people for their service.
