Practice starts next week at Douglas High

The fall sports season gets underway at Douglas High School next week, starting with the opening of football practice on Thursday.

First, the school will present a mandatory drug, alcohol and tobacco presentation for all new athletes on Wednesday at 6 p.m. All new athletes and a parent or guardian must attend the event.

A mandatory random drug testing presentation is the same night at 6:30 for all new and returning athletes. A parent or guardian of each athlete must be in attendance for this presentation as well.

The first official day of football practice is Thursday and the first day of practice and tryouts for the remaining fall sports is Aug. 17. All athletes must have completed the school's clearance process before participating in the tryouts.

Several sports will be holding voluntary conditioning sessions in preparation for tryouts. That information is as follows:

BOYS' SOCCER

The school's annual alumni game will be Monday at 6 p.m. and conditioning sessions will continue Tuesday through Friday from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Big George Sports Complex on the south end of the high school.

Tryouts begin Aug. 17 and continue Aug. 18 from 8 to 10 a.m. both days.

Regular practices start Aug. 19 from 3 to 5 p.m.

BOYS' TENNIS

A coach has not yet been hired for the fall season.

CROSS COUNTRY

FOOTBALL

Practice starts Thursday for varsity, junior varsity and freshmen.

GIRLS' GOLF

No offseason workouts are planned. For information on the team or on tryouts, e-mail sgustafs@dcsd.k12.nv.us.

GIRLS' SOCCER

The team will have workouts on Monday from 6 to 7:30 a.m. at a location to be announced and Tuesday and Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Douglas High grass soccer fields.

They will also be holding a team camp in the mornings next week.

GIRLS' TENNIS

The team will have voluntary workouts from 8 to 9:30 a.m. today, Monday, Tuesday and Aug. 14 at the high school tennis courts.

Mandatory tryouts will be 8 to 10 a.m. on Aug. 17 and 18 at the high school. Players must attend both days of tryouts in order to make the team.

VOLLEYBALL

Two-a-day conditioning runs Monday through Friday from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the Douglas High track and from 5 to 7 p.m. in the gym.
