In gearing up for her junior year of high school, Douglas golf standout Bethany Wurster has taken on a hefty summer schedule.
The two-time defending Northern 4A Regional champion is hoping just to get her name out there for college's to see. Judging by the way the summer has progressed, she's been able to do just that.
Wurster suffered a minor breakdown at the Callaway Junior Worlds, shooting 77, 90 and 85, but came back strong to tie for fifth at the Under Armor College Combine, shooting a 77.
"It was kind of nervewracking," Wurster said of the combine tournament, where as many as 12 college coaches were watching at any given time. "I just tried to play like I usually do and keep up conversation with the girls I was playing with, because I already knew them from other tournaments."
She came off the successful combine by going 80-75-74-72 on the par 71 course at the Girls Junior Americas Cup in Logan, Utah, taking 32nd.
Her finish helped the Northern Nevada team to a 12-place finish overall.
She still has the Mary Kay Cup in San Diego this week and the Northern Nevada Tournament of Champions before the high school season starts in September.
"I've been spending a lot of time refining my swing to where if something drastic is going on I will be able to identify it and fix it," she said. "After the blowup at the Junior Worlds, I felt like I just needed to get my head on straight. Whatever goes on up there will come through in my actions, so I spent some time trying to get that right. My mental stability out on the course is a lot better now."
