Smith's Food & Drug has donated $1,000 to the Douglas County Animal Shelter from proceeds received from customer support of Smith's Pet Club program.

The shelter will use the funds to pay veterinarian costs for spay and neutering of animals and to support the agency's pet adoption program.

The donation represents Smith's commitment to injured or homeless animals by donating $1 to local animal support organizations for every $100 a customer spends on pet supplies at Smith's stores.

Shoppers wishing to become a Pet Club participant simply link their Smith's Fresh Values Card with the program at the check stand and points accumulate on the grocery store receipt.

Smith's Pet Club members in Northern Nevada generated a total of $10,740 in donations that will be given to Dogtown Canine Rescue in Carson City, Animal Relief Foundation in Elko and the Nevada Humane Society in Reno.

"Our customers love their pets and that concern extends to stray pets as well," said Marsha Gilford, Smith's vice president of public affairs. "Through the Pet Club they reach out and help agencies find better surroundings for homeless and stray animals. The annual donation has increased each year since the program began, which indicates our customers' growing support as well."

Smith's Food & Drug charitable giving, in partnership with 13,000 associates, generous customers and suppliers totaled more than $6 million in cash and food products to local organizations in 2008.

Smith's currently operates a total of 133 stores in seven western states, including 48 in Utah. Smith's is a division of the Kroger Company, one of the nation's largest grocery retailers.

In 2008, Kroger was selected Retailer of the Year by Feeding America, formerly America's Second Harvest, the fifth time in seven years the company has received the award.
