Remember the historic barn tour and barn photo contest in May? This is our last call for photos for that contest as we will be announcing a winner soon. Take your barn photos into the Gardnerville museum, the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce or e-mail them to the address below.

The August photo contest for our 2010 calendar is still ongoing. Enter your example of the perfect August photo by 4 p.m. Aug. 31. We'll choose a winner and publish the photo in a September edition of this column. Have you decided how many calendar copies you'd like? You can reserve your copies now by stopping by the Gardnerville museum's Main Street Bookstore and pre-ordering. No money needed now, but your copies will be reserved for you when the calendar becomes available. We can only print one edition of this calendar and it will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis, unless you reserve your copies ahead.

Thirsty Third Thursday is Aug. 20. The theme this month is the 1950s, continuing our Hot August Nights celebrations. So put on your poodle skirt and boogie on over to the Gardnerville museum for snacks and beverages. We'll also have our 2010 calendar sample and pre-order forms available then. The next Douglas County Historical Society swap meet is Aug. 22. This and the meet on Sept. 12 are the last chances this summer to unload all that stuff that manages to accumulate. So rent your own booth space and sell or just come on out and see what your neighbors have up for sale. Booth space is $10 but buyers are always welcome for free.

Upcoming events include Student-Senior Day on Sept. 5 at the Genoa Courthouse Museum since the Gardnerville museum is closed for the Labor Day holiday. The lecture on Sept. 10 features Darin Talbot who talks about the history of Lake Tahoe locales.

October always features our historic ghost walks. This year there are four walks, from historic Minden and Gardnerville to historic Genoa and the Genoa cemetery. This is a marvelous opportunity to spend a beautiful fall evening or day in Genoa enjoying the history of our community. Check our Web site for exact dates and times.

For any questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
