Friends and family are gathering to help an 11-year-old Meneley Elementary School student who was struck by a car in Southern California on Thursday.

The daughter of Shane and Sabrina Martin, Rebecca most recently performed in "Godspell" and has appeared in other plays, including the BAC Stage Kids production of "Snow White" in the spring.

"Godspell" Director Kris Garrett said in an e-mail that Rebecca was visiting her grandmother in Southern California when she was struck in a crosswalk.

According to the Caring Bridge Web site, Rebecca was walking a few feet ahead of her grandmother as they were coming home from the store. Cars in two lanes were stopped, but a third car sped between the two stopped cars, hitting her and throwing her 15-20 feet in the air.

Rebecca landed on the hood of the car. She was rushed to University of Southern California Medical Center, where she is in serious, but stable condition, according to her Caring Bridge Web site.

Rebecca is still sedated, according to her parents.

"She has been attached to an EEG machine for the next 24 hours to monitor her brain activity," they wrote on the Web site. "If another seizure was to occur, they would be able to tell where it was coming from."

They thanked all the supporters who've been following Rebecca's condition online.

"We would like to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts, especially for those who have sent best wishes, prayers, gifts, making sure that we are being fed, watching our animals, our house and the millions of other different ways you have helped and shown your love," they said. "Please continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers."

The owners of the Canine Country Club are taking care of the family's animals for free.

One of Rebecca's classmates, Amber Johnson, is organizing her friends for a campaign to support her recovery.
