Bye, local business

Despite the original resistance to the proposed Walmart project, somebody seems to have caved. In Aug. 19 issue of The Record-Courier, it was announced that the zoning has been approved for a Walmart Supercenter. No, it's all right, Douglas County; don't ask the residents. It's not like our opposition matters, right?

The 152,495-square-foot supercenter is not only that, though. It includes a plan to build a raised median (bypassing Les Schwab), a new stop light, and a parking lot practically bigger than Gardnerville itself. At first, the Walmart will be nothing more than a sort of eyesore, but within a few years of settling, we'll see all of its local competition die off.

As evident in hundreds of other small towns across America, Gardnerville is about to become a one-store town. Don't worry though, public. Walmart will be hiring about 300 people. So when your business goes under, Wal-mart applications are available at the customer service counter.
