Class is in session, and not only for students in elementary and secondary schools. Classes, workshops and auditions are coming up in September.
Sign up for dance, take a class in painting, learn how to take care of a horse or take classes toward a college degree.
Instruction is offered through the Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department, Western Nevada College and through private instructors.

Kindermusik. Infants to age 7 learn direction, guidance and responsiveness through music.

Musical theater. Learn how to audition by preparing songs, learning to act and basic movement. Classes are 6-7 p.m. for ages 6-9, 2:45-3:45 p.m. for ages 10 -13 and 4-5 p.m. for age 14 and older, Tuesdays at the Dance Workshop. Cost is $50 per month.
Introduction to horses
Students age 5 to 15 learn about horses, grooming, equipment and hands-on horsemanship. Class is 4:30-5:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 15-Oct. 6. Cost is $80 plus $15 material fee.
Jazz/hip hop
Classes include warm-up, stretch, floor techniques and aerobic combination for age 6 through adult at the Dance workshop. Call for class dates and time. Cost is $50 per month, with 10 percent discount offered for families in youth and adult classes.
Ballet
Students age 3 and older learn ballet and develop concentration, imagination, coordination, self-discipline and confidence. Classes held at World Gym.

Discovery Center
Registration is open for preschool and extended day kindergarten taught by early childhood development and education trained staff. Discovery Center begins Sept. 8. Registration fee is $20. Information, director Cindy Webb, 790-1235.
Ballroom Dance
Learn the fundamentals for the fox trot, swing, waltz and Latin dances. Class is Friday for ages 10 and older. Cost is $80 per couple.
Scrapbooking
Bring plenty of photos for a day of scrapbooking with instructor Jackie Gordon. Tools available. Class is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 19 at Gardnerville Elementary School. Cost is $10.
Concealed weapon
certification
Course meets and exceeds Nevada State concealed weapon certification requirements. Class is Sept. 16, 18 and 19 and includes safety and live fire drills at the shooting range. Cost is $90 plus an additional $10 insurance fee.
Yoga
Yoga focuses on the body, mind and spirit with concentration on control, stretching and breathing. Class is 9:30-11 a.m. or 7-8:30 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays at the recreation annex building. Bring an exercise mat. Cost is $40 per month.
WNC classes begin Monday
Classes begin Aug. 31 at Western Nevada College. Douglas residents don't have to commute to earn a college degree this fall. Western Nevada College offers classes at the Douglas campus on Bently Parkway in Minden, and more courses are available online. Students are encouraged to work with an academic counselor to plan a schedule that fits their needs.
WNC provides classes in criminal justice, education, accounting and welding. Students may apply online and sign up for classes at www.wnc.edu
The Douglas campus has courses in biology, math, business, English, education and economics that can be part of two or four-year degrees.
For job skills, WNC Douglas offers bookkeeping and financial accounting courses on campus, and six more sections are offered online, including an introduction to QuickBooks and managerial accounting. Four business classes are offered on campus and five are offered online. Those aspiring to a law enforcement career can get a jump on a calling that is always in demand. Western offers nine courses in criminal justice at the Douglas campus, including four in a traditional classroom setting and five online.
Those who want to express their creative side have a choice of five craft classes. Students who want to enhance their college success can enroll in Reading Improvement on Monday and Wednesday afternoons.

Try out for a comedy or musical
Auditions are the first week of September for Pau-Wa-Lu Players Productions of "Usher, a totally teen comedy" and "Scrooge, the musical."
Students in grades 7-9 are eligible for the production of "Usher, a totally teen comedy." Auditions are 3-5 p.m. Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 at Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School. Memorize a one-minute monologue. Rehearsals are at 3-5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Sept. 8. Performances are Oct. 23-25.
All ages are eligible for the production of "Scrooge, the musical." If you ever wanted to perform, this is your chance. Auditions are Sept. 3 and 4, at 3-5 p.m. for students and 7-9 p.m. for adults. Prepare a one-minute song with accompaniment. Rehearsal schedules and cast list posted by Sept. 7. Performance dates are Dec. 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13.

Watercolor and drawing classes offered
Painting classes
Artist Reiko Hervin offers drawing and watercolor classes from September to November at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension conference room, 1329 Waterloo Lane, Gardnerville.
Each beginning, intermediate or advanced level class includes 30 minutes of still-life drawing and two hours of watercolor painting and critique.
Beginning class A: Step-by-step for the absolute beginner, 9:30 a.m. to noon Thursdays, beginning Sept. 10.
Intermediate class B: For less than three years' painting experience, 1-3:30 p.m. Thursdays, beginning Sept. 10.
Advanced class C: For advanced amateurs with more than five years' painting experience, 1-3:30 p.m. Thursdays beginning Sept. 3.
