The Carson Valley Sierra Youth Football League junior varsity and varsity teams exploded into football at Saturdays' SYFL Experience Football Scrimmage at Golden Eagle Regional Park in Sparks.

This is the first season and first time teams from Carson Valley are competing in the Sierra Youth Football League, a league which boasts over 2,200 players from Northern Nevada and California. Players from Carson, Dayton and Douglas County make up the two teams representing the Carson Valley area, ranging in ages from 9 to 12 years of age.

The Carson Valley SYFL junior varsity had their first scrimmage against Reno SYFL JV teams. Scrimmages against both the Spanish Springs Cougars and the Reed Raiders were eye opening. Several of the kids to watch this season are running backs, Chris Martinez, Greg Wallace, Ernie Rojas, Jake Roman, Nate Apodaca, and Jerod Powers. Quarterbacks Colton Schaum and Jacob Martin played well, and proved to be very durable. Kudos goes out to the defensive line kids Sheldon Miller, Michael Rojas, Jose Game-Soto. and Wesley Thompson. Offensive line kids Pierce Horseman, Duy Nguyen, Riley Riedl, Austin Ackernam, Eduardo Duarte and Treston Fowler. Defensive backs were Damian Wallace, Dawson Lamb and Greg Wallace. Linebackers were Chris Martinez, Ernie Rojas, Jerod Powers, Brian Garringer and Connor Chech. Missing and injured players were Geraet Rauh, Skylar Thackston, and Tyler Huling.

The varsity team took the field first against the Fernley Vaqueros. Carson Valley's offense was able to advance into the end zone twice during the scrimmage and was advancing a third time as time ran out. The offensive line consisting of Ethan Brockmeir, Tevin Lafond, Riedl Williamson, Tyler Lethcoe, Anthony Alioto, Garrett McElroy and Travis Floyd were outstanding in providing the punch for Carson Valley's backfield.

Running backs Andrew Jensen, Ikela Lewis and Mathias Williams were able to slice and pound the ball towards the end zone for the CV Senators with Jensen and Lewis each crossing the goal line. Quarter Backs Jake Kyhl and Jeffrey Sparks split time running the Senators' offense. Kyhl was effective in handing the ball off to the running backs and Sparks went 2 for 4 passing during the teams drives.

The Varsity Defense was equally impressive. The defensive line anchored by Cliff Coston, Mathew Milder, Joshua Jensen, Alioto and Lafond were able to get into the Vaqueros backfield and disrupt their plays, many for losses or no gains. Line Backers Marco Castillo, Ben Ray and Andrew Jensen along with Defensive Backs Johnny Lopez, Dallon Mendoza and Tristan Nollsch supported the D-Line in keeping the Vaqueros out of the end zone. The defense had a solid outing.

It was an impressive debut for the teams from Carson Valley which regular season begins August 29th and consists of 8 regular season games and playoffs should either team advance. The JV division has 16 teams and the Varsity has 17 teams competing in SYFL.

We are very proud of their efforts, and wish them the best this season. Come out and support us at Carson High School. Schedule to be announced. For more info on Carson Valley SYFL contact Cynthia Chech at 883-0184.
