EDITOR:

It was a busy summer at the Douglas County Public Library. Records were broken as over 1,000 children signed up for the summer reading program, Be Creative @ Your Library.

The generosity of the local business community was incredible. Jimmy Mickler at Pizza Barn, Logan at Arby's, Northwest Martial Arts, and Tumbleweeds Gymnastics donated gift certificates for our prize bags. The Carson Valley Swim Center provided swim passes for all participants. Round Table Pizza donated personal pizzas to all finishers. Minden Fortnightly's donation sponsored the live animal program, Nature's Critters. A grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services paid for the Fratello Marionette show, books encouraging creativity, and miscellaneous supplies for the summer reading program.

Community volunteers gave of themselves: Dennis Little, shared his hobby of origami; Jimmy Darrough and Frank Benvenuto from Giggling Books presented the Build-A-Book program; Lorraine Felix of Felix Pottery donated materials and presented a clay project; Michelle Gabler from the Carson Valley Arts Council along with her assistants judged our Lego® contest; Teri Sweeney taught and provided materials for a watercolor class; Shawna Pisciotti, Kindermusik teacher, helped with storytime and presented a drum class. Volunteers who helped at the children's desk were: Linda Class, Duncan Deacy, Nancy McDermid, Penelope Wright, Joni Wahl, Theresa DeGraffenreid, Deirdre Ryan-Pase, Jennifer Martinez, Natalie Wotman, Sejal Kothawala, Margo Thorne, Susan Garcia, Reena Spansail, and Karen Williams.

A special thank you to Raley's for donating a gift card for supplies to make the best ice cream in the world for Smokey Bear's birthday. Thanks to Stacy Saucedo from the U.S. Forest Service Carson Ranger District for bringing Smokey, it was a great ice cream party.

The parks and recreation department is thanked for the use of Lampe Park all summer for storytime, and the Town of Minden for the use of the CVIC Hall. The Record-Courier and Shannon Litz did a great job publicizing the library's special events. We couldn't function without the help of the Friends of the Library. They fund things we need from books to prizes to programs. Thank you to the educators and school librarians who promoted the program with their students. Thank you to all of these people and businesses for enriching the lives of Douglas County children. The library could not have run such a well-received program without you. Congratulations to the 412 finishers of the Be Creative @ Your Library reading program. What an accomplishment.
