Las Vegas finished off a 48-21 season-opening win over the Douglas football team by scoring 27 unanswered points over the final quarter and a half at Las Vegas High School Friday night.

Johnny Pollack scored a pair of touchdowns on offense and picked off a pass on defense while Jordan Cruz returned a kick 99 yards for a touchdown to account for the Tigers' scoring.

Douglas got on the board first after Pollack's interception on the Wildcats' first drive. He scored a couple plays later to take a 7-0 lead.

Las Vegas came back with 21 unanswered points before the Pollack punched one in for the Tigers just before halftime.

Douglas carried the momentum into the next half, as Cruz returned the kickoff for a touchdown and tied the game at 21.

The Tigers forced a punt on the next possession, taking over at their own 36, but they came up short on a fourth-down attempt, giving the Wildcats the ball at the Douglas 45.

The Wildcats scored shortly after on a 36-yard pass, taking the lead for good.

Las Vegas hurt Douglas with a number of big plays throughout the game, including touchdown passes of 47, 37, 36, 20 and 17 yards and got a 60-yard touchdown run from its quarterback en route to the win.

Douglas opens its home slate next Friday against Reno at 7 p.m. at Keith Duke Roman Field.

While The Record-Courier couldn't be in Las Vegas for tonight's Douglas High football season-opener against the Las Vegas Wildcats, Valley resident Tim Dry provided us with periodic updates throughout the game.

9:52 p.m.: Volleyball won their third match of the day two games to none.

6:46 p.m.: Report from volleyball: Tigers beat Rancho 25-10, 25-20 to improve to 2-0 in pool play. Tim says its 104 degrees with no breeze on the football field. Expect this to be a major factor in the game tonight -- Douglas is in great condition, but those are nasty temps, no matter how good of shape you are in.

5:51 p.m.: Still about a little over an hour away from kickoff, but Tim has forwarded an initial report from the Douglas High volleyball team's season-opening match at the Las Vegas Invitational, which is also being played at Las Vegas High.

The Tigers topped Pahrump 25-22, 25-14 in the first game of pool play. Douglas is the defending champion in this tournament and figures to be among the favorites to win this year's state championship.
