The Coleville football team opened the 2009 campaign at home with a dominating performance, beating Smith Valley 76-18.

Senior quarterback Jason Peters became the state's all-time leading passer with 11 completions for 193 yards and 4 touchdowns and no interceptions.

He already owned the state records for career and season touchdown passes, career and season total offense and season passing yardage coming into the year. He just needed 18 yards to eclipse the career passing mark, and quickly passed that. His career mark now stands at 6,219 yards.

He also rushed for four touchdowns, powering for 146 yards rushing on 12 carriers.

Senior tight end Jay Clark led the Wolves with 75 yards on 4 receptions including two touchdown receptions.

Despite seeing double coverage most of the game, Junior split end Emmi Sandoval still managed to catch two touchdown passes, ending with 59 receiving yards.

Shane Parker had 50 yards receiving on two receptions with Cody Clark catching three passes for 19 yards including an 8-yard TD reception.

Sophomore tailback John "Buh" Hamilton rushed for 37 yards and scored two rushing conversions.

The real story of the game might have been the performance of Coleville's defense, which gave up an average of 50 points last season. The Wolves held Smith Valley's star running back Tony Castaneda to under 100 yards and only surrendered two touchdowns.

Coleville forced five turnovers including Steve Koelling's fumble recovery in the endzone for a touchdown.

Jason Peters with four solos, seven assists, and one fumble caused and Jay Clark with two solos and 15 assists led the Wolves defensively.

Emmi Sandoval and Cody Clark both had interceptions and played well defensively. Defensive linemen Patrick Burgan and Tyler Summers also had outstanding games defensively.

"I am most happy with our defensive effort," Coleville coach Will Sandy said. "Our defense forced five turnovers and consistently gave our offense a short field to work with.

"Our new defensive coordinator Cody Carlisle is doing an outstanding job with our boys. We still have lots of work to do on special teams. We surrendered a 79-yard kickoff return and failed to cover two onside kickoffs. We have to get that fixed."

Coleville will host Round Mountain on Saturday at 1 p.m.
