Musical adaptation of Dickens' holiday classic opens today

Pau-Wa-Lu Players present "Scrooge the Musical," featuring students, staff, teachers and administration from the Douglas County School District. Performances are 7 p.m. today and Saturday, and Dec. 11, 12 and 2 p.m. Sunday and Dec. 13 at Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School, 701 Long Valley Road in the Gardnerville Ranchos.

"Scrooge the Musical," written by Leslie Bricusse, is based on the Charles Dickens' classic, "A Christmas Carol," where Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by ghostly spirits on Christmas Eve.

"Scrooge the Musical" is directed by Rich and Kris Garrett, musical director is Douglas High School senior Brynn Garrett, choreography is by Carson High School senior Jessica Shull and Douglas senior Jaime Skilling, and costumes by Laura Jeanne Hammer.

The cast of 55 includes Rich Alexander, Douglas County School District director of Human Resources, Douglas High Principal Marty Swisher, Douglas teacher Amy Sando and Douglas coach Mike Derbyshire. From Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School are Principal Keith Lewis, Vice Principal Dave Whittemore, and teachers Rich Garrett and Janet Martin. Also are Utahna Derbyshire from Minden Elementary, Dana Blane from Gardnerville Elementary, Jane Fails from Meneley Elementary and students from Valley schools.

Desserts available include pumpkin, pecan and apple pie, chestnuts roasting, hot cider, and carolers. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for children and seniors, available at (775) 219-3577 or rgarrett@dcsd.k12.nv.us
