Staff Reports

About 150 Carson Valley residents attended the TRIAD crime prevention dinner on Wednesday at Carson Valley United Methodist Church. Invited guests included graduates of the senior law enforcement academy, senior volunteers and members of the Douglas County Senior Center.

Information was given on benefits for seniors and veterans, preparedness for senior citizens and seasonal safety tips. Suggestions were given on how older Americans can be prepared:

A recommended kit of emergency supplies to have on hand to make it on your own for at least three days should include: water, nonperishable food, flashlight and batteries, first aid kit, garbage bags, pliers, radio, manual can opener, important family documents, prescription medication.

Make a plan for what to do in an emergency. Consider family members, friends and out-of-town contacts. Create a plan for where to go for shelter. Choose destinations of where to go in an emergency. Make plans on what to do to take care of pets.

Stay informed about what might happen and what types of emergencies are likely to affect your region. Be prepared to adapt this information to your personal circumstances.
