The governor's office has ordered most state offices in Northern Nevada closed because of the snowstorm that dumped a foot of snow in Carson City and across most of northwest Nevada.

Chief of Staff Robin Reedy said it will be up to supervisors in the different departments to determine which employees go home and which are essential.

Those employees sent home will be paid as usual since the state declared a snow day.

"Because they're not working but they're being paid, it makes us very inefficient," she said. "I'd rather be inefficient than have some one die because they were trying to get in to work."

Essential employees include Nevada Highway Patrol troopers and correctional officers as well as NDOT road crews.
