Boys' Basketball: Douglas upends McQueen

The Douglas boys' basketball team picked up its biggest win of the young season Friday night, beating previously unbeaten McQueen 62-48 in Minden.

"They're a great team," Douglas coach Corey Thacker said. "They're put together well, they're big, they're a very solid team. But a lot of things went out way today."

Most notably among those was the Tigers' performance at the free-throw line late in the game. Douglas hit 10-of-13 free throws in the fourth quarter and 15-of-20 in the second half.

Center Jorey Scott led all scorers in the game, scoring 15 points.

"I thought he stepped up and had a great game," Thacker said.

Chris Downs added 12 for Douglas, Garrett Getty and Matt Thomas each had eight, Austin Neddenriep had seven and Nick Maestretti had six.

Douglas opened up a 31-14 lead going into halftime after a 15-1 run to open the second quarter. The Tigers extended the lead to 37-16 on a Garrett Getty lay-up/free-throw combination midway through the third.

McQueen mounted a big comeback, though, going on a 16-0 run sparked by seven-consecutive points from center Greg Cooper.

The Lancer run cut Douglas' lead to 37-32, but Scott scored the final five points of the quarter to put Douglas back out in front.

"I think during McQueen's run, we weren't stopping the ball," Thacker said. "They were getting penetration and they knocked down a 3-pointer.

"We stopped going inside and we went dry, so that didn't help. We got a timeout when they cut it down to five, and talked about getting the ball back inside and got things together from there."

A 14-4 run early in the fourth put the game out of reach for the Lancers and essentially sealed the win for Douglas.

The Tigers will take on Faith Lutheran Saturday at 4 p.m. in Minden.
