Merry Christmas everybody. This year's gingerbread house contest was a huge success. Thanks to the 32 entries, to the many winners and to those of you who voted for your favorite. Best of Show went to the Pinon Kids Club.

First place in the family division went to the Kaufmann family. First in the children's division went to Samuel White. First in the adult division went to Dale Galvan and first in the community division went to the Pinon Kids Club. Congratulations to all everyone who participated.

You still have time to get to the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville and vote for your favorite Christmas trees. The trees will be on display until Dec. 31 and we'll announce the winner here in January.

The 20 percent off sale in the Main Street Bookstore will run for one more week. Don't miss this chance to save on all we have available for you. This may be your last chance to pick up authentic turquoise jewelry or Douglas County Historical Society collector items at a great price.

There is just one week left for you to enter the December photo contest. Photos may be entered at the museum or e-mailed to the address below. We're looking for something that really says December in Douglas County. The winner will be announced Jan. 8.

Tickets go on sale Jan. 4 for the 2010 melodrama, "Hotel Minden II, or Divorce Mill." Performances are Jan. 29, 30 and 31. Last year we sold out two weeks ahead of time, so don't delay. Tickets for Friday and Saturday nights are $20 for DCHS members and $25 for non-members. Tickets for the Sunday matinee are $15 for all.

Stay tuned to this column for more information about this year's melodrama. We have informants in place who will keep us apprised of the rehearsals and even provide a sneak preview photo or two. This is the best laugh around; don't miss it.

DCHS's Young Chautauqua program begins Jan. 12 at the Gardnerville museum. This is a program for students in grades four through 12 who are interested in history, drama or speech. Each student will chose a character from history and will perform as this character. By May the students will be available to perform in your community event. Call 782-2555 for more information on this program or on how to arrange for a student to perform at your event this spring.

For questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
