A memorial Mass is 3 p.m. Tuesday at St. Gall Catholic Church for 27-year Gardnerville resident Eugene "Gene" Schneider, 90, who died on Dec. 17, 2009, at his home.
Born Feb. 9, 1919, in Vergennes, Ill., to Ignatius and Ida Schneider, he served in World War II and was honorably discharged.
He married Josie T. Schneider on Aug. 13, 1949, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Los Angeles.
Before moving to Gardnerville, Mr. Schneider lived in Yucaipa, Calif.
He was a lifetime member of the Elks Club, Independent Order of Foresters and a disabled veteran. He worked for the Carson Valley Inn for 21 years, and was their oldest and longest serving employee when he retired.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening and socializing.
Mr. Schneider was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Josie, sister Ida Hess and brother Walter.
He is survived by daughters Susan M. Allen of Kailuakona, Hawaii, Gina C. Heverling of Placitas, N.M.; grandson Reid M. Hughes of Denver; sister Cleopha McNeeley of Hotsprings, Ark. A private inurnment will be held at Eastside Memorial Park in Minden.
