Gardnerville Ranchos resident and Korean War veteran Harold Jones is trying to raise awareness about the Korean War Memorial in Carson City.
The memorial commemorates the nearly 44,000 U.S. service members who gave their lives during the conflict that has never officially ended.
Chapter No. 305 of the Korean War Veterans Association recently completed the final phase of the memorial, located at Riverview Park in Carson City, where Fifth Street ends.
The original portion of the memorial was dedicated on Memorial Day 2005, and work continued until May 16 when a portion of the memorial including a replica of a Korean-style house made of marble was dedicated. The 4,500-pound marble house was quarried and carved in South Korea and then placed on a new pedestal at the memorial.
The veterans had a 5-foot tall bronze eagle statue made for the original pedestal, and are now filling in the walks at the memorial with engraved bricks purchased for $50.
Jones estimated there are more than 400 bricks in place and room for more. Each brick has the veteran's name, rank, service date and branch of the service.
The memorial consists of four large boulders representing the last four major battles in Korea where action took place from March 26 through the end of July 1953. These battles were named "The Nevada Cities Campaign" Carson, Vegas, Reno, and Elko. The brick pedestal at the center lists the names of the 34 Nevadans killed in action, a description of the "Nevada Cities" battles and a list of major donors.
Three flag poles display the U.S., Korean, Nevada, and MIA flags that are illuminated at night. There are park benches and stone seats for people to sit and enjoy the memorial.
To purchase a Korean War Veterans Memorial Brick in the Korean War Veterans Memorial Park, send $50 to Korean War Veterans Association, P.O. Box 20666, Carson City, 89721. For information call 265-2647.
