Snow day? Jim DeGraffenreid's letter puts it right.
Twenty-four inches or so of light fresh snow is no reason to stay home, though it does make things outdoors a bit different.
Jeremy Tigh's '90 Honda sounds like a good performer in such conditions if not modified, but some tire and wheel choices truly could cause it to be a poor snow car. Even then, staying indoors with hot chocolate would not do much, better to get outside for a snowball fight or even to clear porch and walks of snow.
Doing that would build experience in dealing with slippery conditions, maybe in a fun way.
Snowy conditions are normal for millions of people in many parts of the world and one simply deals with it, learning from experience, as one gets better at it.
Yes, some of us are not very lucky and may have a problem such as Crystal Judd's friend, whom I am truly sorry for.
A snow day would be perfect for those who enjoy winter sports, but of course would expose them to even more possibility of slippery conditions both on the roads and in the parking lot of a ski area.
Injuries are rare and usually caused by not being quite as careful as is necessary.
What did I do on that snowy Monday morning?
I had to drive 50 miles to Reno because both my wife and I had appointments we needed to keep.
It took twice as long as usual but we made it with 10 minutes to spare. A little scary at times but no problems at all.
