SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Nevada women's basketball team fell, 72-60, to host San Diego in its first game of the Maggie Dixon Surf N Slam Classic at San Diego.
With the loss, Nevada falls to 6-6 while San Diego improved to 7-6.
San Diego went up by five, 7-2, with 16:31 left in the first half before the Pack went on a 7-0 run to go ahead by two, 11-9, on a layup by Shavon Moore with 13:50 left in the half.
The Pack extended its lead to five, 16-11 on a jumper by Brittany Woodard with 10:33 left in the half. San Diego pulled ahead and went up by six, 25-19, with 5:01 left in the half before taking a five point lead at half, 35-30.
Nevada shot 42.9 percent (9-of-21) from the floor in the first half while San Diego shot 44.1 percent (15-of-34). Moore, Johnna Ward and Nicole Williams each led Nevada at the half with six points each.
In the second half, San Diego extended its lead to nine points, 39-30, with 18:27 left in the game before the Pack cut the lead to four, 39-34, on a three pointer by Ward with 16:55 remaining.
Nevada used a 6-0 run to pull within one, 46-45, on a steal and layup by Amanda Johnson with 11:53 left in the game before the Toreros pushed its lead to eight, 53-45 with just over eight minutes remaining in the game.
After San Diego went up by 10 with 4:59 left to play before Nevada cut the lead to five, 63-58 with 3:15 to play but the Toreros quickly retook an eight-point lead, 66-58 with under three minutes to play.
Turnovers plagued Nevada in the loss as the team committed a season-high 29 turnovers. Moore led Nevada with 20 points, one off her career high, while Ward added nine points. Johnson and Kayla Williams each recorded five rebounds.
The Pack shot 40.8 percent (20-of-49) from the floor and 84.2 percent (16-of-19) from the free throw line.
Nevada will play in the consolation game on Wednesday at 6 p.m. versus the loser of the Cal/Boston College game which is being played at 8 p.m. Monday night.
