In our small area, local students don't just go to school and back home. With the relatively small enrollment in our middle and high schools, they become more involved with a variety of activities than those in bigger towns. Here are some examples:
The Lions Club's 72nd annual Student Speaker's contest will be held Monday, Feb. 9, 7 p.m., at the Walker Community Center. This year's topic is "Water - Will California be left high and dry?" This annual event is very special, as it always deals with a subject of importance, as well as giving the students a great learning experience for their future lives.
We have 14 students participating in the Mathcounts competition. Our team has been working very hard on perfecting their skills during lunch breaks and will participate in the state competition to be held in Sacramento on Feb. 28.
The high school's boys' and girls' basketball teams are in full swing in their league right now. They are doing well and representing us proudly.
Middle school girls are starting a volleyball program, with their first game tomorrow in Bridgeport. They will play several games at Coleville during the next month, so check with the school for times and dates, and try to get over there to see a match.
Regional planning advisory committee
The monthly meeting of the Antelope Valley RPAC will be 7 p.m. Thursday at the Walker Community Center. As always, the things discussed affect our valley and its future. Tomorrow, Caltrans will be there to discuss the High Point curve correction project and how it will affect our daily lives during construction.
Anniversary party was fun
On Jan. 22, friends and family hosted a surprise 50th anniversary party for Bob and Sue Ames at Johnny's Roadhouse. The company was fun, and the food was the usual great meal from our newest local dining spot. Happy anniversary, Bob and Sue!
Super Bowl finally over
For a solid two weeks, sports fans heard nothing but pre-game talk about the Super Bowl. Mike and I are football fans, so it was a game we looked forward to, and as it turned out, we weren't disappointed. I didn't really have a favorite team and just wanted them both to do well in the spotlight, which they did, with Pittsburgh winning 27-23. Now we'll have a long while to wait for next season.
