Saddle-trained horses up for adoption

Seventeen saddle-trained horses from the ranges of Nevada will graduate from months of training and are looking for good homes and enthusiastic owners.

The Bureau of Land Management, the Nevada Department of Agriculture & the Nevada Department of Corrections invite horse lovers and the general public to a special horse adoption event in Carson City, beginning at 10 a.m. Feb. 21.

Twelve wild horses from BLM-administered public lands and five estray horses under the jurisdiction of the State of Nevada will be offered for adoption at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center off Snyder Avenue in Carson City.

Public access to the corrals opens at 9 a.m. and competitive bid adoptions conducted by auctioneer begins at 10 a.m.

The horses range in age from 3 to 8 years, are saddle-trained with 120 days of training and vary in weight and color. The beginning bid on all horses is $150.

The animals are saddle-trained by inmates in the Nevada Department of Corrections program.

A catalog of BLM wild horses and estray horses offered at the Feb. 21 adoption may be viewed at www.blm.gov/nv/ Copies are also available at BLM offices in Reno and Carson City.

To pre-qualify for the weekend adoption call the BLM at (775) 861-6223 or Nevada estray horses through the Mustangs of America Foundation at (775) 343-9118.

Potential adopters are asked to enter the Northern Nevada Correctional Center off Snyder Avenue on the south side of Carson City. From Highway 395, take Snyder Avenue east for 1.5 miles to the entrance to the Northern Nevada Correctional Center. Turn right (south) and watch for signs and event personnel giving directions to the horse corrals and parking.

NNCC rules prohibit the public from wearing any blue clothing, blue jeans, tank tops or shorts. No cell phones, cameras or recording devices.
