The Main Street Gardnerville program is offering public flower baskets for Valentine's Day as an alternative to traditional bouquets or chocolates.
Valentines can become part of the beautification of downtown Gardnerville and support horticultural programs at two area schools.
Last summer, the flowering baskets were seen hanging from lamp posts along Highway 395 in downtown Gardnerville. The baskets were created by horticultural students at Douglas High School.
Donation cost is $60 per basket. Gardnerville officials plan to hang the fully flowering baskets in early June to be enjoyed throughout the growing season. Valentines can admire the flowers all summer and won't need to water them.
Participants receive a card with a photo of one of the flower baskets. Donations can also be made for birthdays and anniversaries.
Sponsors will be acknowledged on the Town's Web site when the baskets are installed. To sponsor a basket, call the Gardnerville Town Office at 782-7134.
The Main Street Gardnerville program is affiliated with the National Main Street Program for historical preservation.
