n The Rustlers play, 8 p.m. to midnight today. The Rustlers cover hard-core country music by Montgomery Gentry, Alan Jackson, Brooks & Dunn and Dierks Bently. The Carson City-based band is Ev Musselman on guitar and lead vocals, Larry Goldman on bass guitar and vocals, Brian Williams on lead guitar and vocals, Jim Park on pedal steel guitar and Russ Hohenberger on drums and vocals.

Gung hay fat choy

Celebrate Chinese New Year of the Ox, 1-3:30 p.m. Saturday, at Gardnerville Elementary School, 1290 Toler Ave., Gardnerville.

Traditional Chinese music and dance will be performed by Sonia Carlson and the Chinese Cultural Group. Activities include Chinese calligraphy, origami, games, art and crafts and a New Year parade with Chinese lions. Chinese snacks will be served. Cost is $8 for ages 5 and older, $7 for seniors and free for children younger than 4 years.

Museum lecture on Virginia City

Joe Curtis presents a pictorial look at Virginia City's past, 7 p.m. Thursday, at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center 1477 Highway 395, Gardnerville. The free lecture series is sponsored by the Douglas County Historical Society the second Thursday of the month. The museum and the Main Street Book Store will be open before and following the one-hour lecture. Information, 782-2555.


Gourd art at East Fork Gallery

Artist Norma Holland gives a demonstration of creating gourd art, 1-3 p.m. Feb. 14 at East Fork Gallery, 1503 Highway 395, Gardnerville, 782-7629. Holland has been an artist-participant in fundraisers for the Nevada Indian Commission and a featured artist in the 58th Annual Governor's Interstate Indian Council Conference at Lake Tahoe. Light refreshments will be served.


Elks crab feed

The Minden/Douglas Elks annual Crab Feed is Feb. 20 at the CVIC Hall in Minden. Social hour starts at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m. On the menu is fresh Dungeness crab flown in from Oregon, garlic bread and cole slaw. Shrimp cocktails will be for sale in the bar area. Steaks will be available by advanced notice only for those who don't want crab. Cost is $35 per person.

Carson Valley Inn entertainment

Blue Flame continues in the Carson Valley Inn's Cabaret Lounge through Sunday, Jo Mama makes their Carson Valey Inn debut Feb. 10-15 and Naked City plays Feb. 16-22.

Live entertainment presented with no cover and no minimum with five 45-minute shows starting on the hour at 6 p.m. Sunday through Thursday nights and 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights.

Blue Flame is Melissa Dru on lead vocals, electric and acoustic guitar and percussion along with Mick Hampson on lead guitar and vocals. The duo brings a variety of sounds from all eras. Blue Flame plays Monday through Feb. 9.

Jo Mama is a party and dance band playing a variety of music featuring funky rhythm and blues and light jazz. The band is Paul Covarelli and Rick O'Neil on vocals, veteran drummer Bill Heise and Remmel Wilson on sax and keyboards. Jo Mama plays Feb. 10-15.

World music in concert series

The Carson Valley Arts Council 2008-09 concert series continues with world music group Kaweh tonight at the CVIC Hall, 1602 Esmeralda in Minden. A wine, beer and cheese reception sponsored by Tahoe Ridge Winery is at 6 p.m. Desserts by Bravo Cafe & Bakery served at 8:30 p.m. Admission is a $15 donation at the door. Information, 782-8207.

The concert series continues with blues guitarist Chris Cain on March 13 and Mumbo Gumbo on May 8.

Dinner dance for Austin's House

Austin's House presents the Mardi Gras Magic dinner and dance, 6 p.m. Feb. 20, in the Shannon Ballroom at the Carson Valley Inn. The fundraiser recreates the party atmosphere of New Orleans with music, dancing, prizes and food.

Cocktail hour begins 6 p.m. The event features dance music by Fabrizio, raffle drawings and silent auction. A grand prize drawing is for a vacation at Harrah's New Orleans.

The Cajun buffet dinner features peel and eat shrimp, chicken gumbo, blackened fish, Louisiana hot links steamed in beer, shrimp etouffee and smoked rib-eye roast with all the trimmings.

The ticket donation for Mardi Gras Magic to benefit Austin's House is $50. Tables of 10 are available. Only 200 tickets will be sold. Call 267-6711 to order tickets. Visa and MasterCard are accepted.

Bridal fair Feb. 22

A bridal fair to showcase local wedding vendors is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Genoa Lakes Golf Club.

The open house is complimentary to those in the process of planning their weddings. Attendees will be able to taste chocolate, champagne, coffee and wine from the vendors of Destination Genoa.

Wedding vendors, professionals and location representatives to exhibit at the open house include Genoa area florists, wedding planners, photographers, food and beverage suppliers. The event features area bakeries, room accommodations and wedding/reception site providers.

Carson City

Sleepwalk, a Robot at Warehouse

Phoenix rock band Sleepwalk, a Robot plays 7 p.m. Feb. 13 at the Warehouse at Highway 50 and East College Parkway in Carson City.

Sleepwalk is known for its acoustic "digi-rock" sound that comes from two musicians who formerly taught high school math. The band is Travis Pack on vocals, guitar and beats and Justin Barker on guitar and hooks.

The duo is played on Phoenix radio and have opened concerts for techno-pop group The Medic Droid and plan to "take over the planet one sing-along dance party at a time."

The concert is sponsored by the Associated Students of Western Nevada College. Doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets are available at the door. Cost is $5 for students with ASWN card and $7 for general admission.


Carson City 'Idol'

Calling singers, dancers, musicians, gymnasts, and other solo variety acts, age 6-17, for Wild Horse Children's Theater's second annual Capital City Idol Talent Competition at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada on March 14.

The time of performance must be less than three and a half minutes and any music must be provided on CD. Singers must not have vocal tracks or background vocals on the CD. No duets or groups.

There will be divisions of youth (ages 6-9), junior (ages 10-12) and senior (ages 13-17). Idol contestant closed preliminaries start at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 28. Competition finalists perform and compete for prizes at 6:30 p.m. March 14.

First- and second-place winners in each division selected. Judges select winners based on talent, stage presence, personality and entertainment value.
