Hunter Myers, an eighth-grader at Carson Valley Middle School, placed in the top four out of 82 middle school math enthusiasts competing at the recent Mathcounts Chapter Competition, which took place Feb. 7 at NV Energy in Reno.
The Davidson Academy, Billinghurst Middle School, and Swope Middle School were the front-runners in a field of 13 Northern Nevada middle schools. Top individual honors went to Angela Xu, a Davidson Academy eighth-grader.
The top 10 individual students, representing five Northern Nevada middle schools, along with the top three Northern Nevada school teams, earned the right to compete against the Southern Nevada Chapter at the Mathcounts State Competition on March 28 in Las Vegas.
Mathcounts was developed to increase math literacy in a positive and rewarding way, and to raise awareness of the importance of strong math skills in an expanding number of careers. Mathcounts was founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the CNA Foundation.
