Six people have applied for Mike Olson's seat on the Douglas County Planning Commission.

Olson resigned the seat after being elected county commissioner in November. This Monday, at his first county commission meeting, Olson will be voting for his replacement on the planning commission.

The six applicants form a wide cross section of Douglas County residents. Ranging in age from 25 to 82, they offer a variety of backgrounds and credentials.

Daniel Heath, 52, moved from Moreno Valley, Calif. to Sunridge about two months ago.

A staff specialist for the Nevada Department of Transportation, Heath has a bachelor's degree in business with an emphasis in accounting.

"I have participated in producing the general plan for the city of Moreno Valley," he said. "I have 15 years' experience in transportation with the California Department of Transportation and have served as president of the volunteer fire department."

Jeanne Lamb, a 68-year-old retired high school teacher, has lived in Gardnerville for a year and a half.

Lamb has a master's degree in curriculum and instruction and a bachelor's in English.

"I have a life-long commitment to be of service to the community where I live," she said. "It would be a privilege to be part of the volunteer team and support issues of concern to the community."

Gardnerville chiropractor Donald Miner also applied to the position. The 69-year-old has lived in Douglas County for more than 20 years and served eight years as a county commissioner.

"I have an interest in serving Douglas County in an area where my experience will allow me to begin immediately, understand and effectively participate," he said. "I'm committed to the betterment of the future of Douglas County in all areas of government, planning and management."

James Nicklos, 82, is a semi-retired land surveyor and forester that has lived in the Topaz and East Valley areas for eight years.

"My primary interest is to contribute to the orderly development of Carson Valley (within the framework of the master plan, zoning and ordinances) while maintaining its unique characteristics," he said. "I have witnessed the development of the San Fernando Valley, the Santa Clara Valley, the Sacramento Valley, and the desecration of the Owens Valley. Hopefully, I can contribute 'legally' to maintaining the wonderful resource that we enjoy in Douglas County."

Retired Foothill resident Kevin Servatius, 56, has lived in Douglas County for 20 years.

Servatius has a master's degree in business administration and served as senior vice president and general manager for both Harrah's and Harveys casinos at Lake Tahoe before retiring.

"My business experience at a senior level combined with 20 years of residency in Douglas County would make me a sound addition to the planning board," he said.

Gardnerville resident Blaine Spires, 25, has lived in Douglas County his entire life.

Spires, a political science student at the University of Nevada, Reno, ran for county commissioner in the August primaries against incumbent commissioner Doug Johnson.

Spires lost the campaign but said the experience inspired him to become more involved in the community.

"I have lived in Douglas County my whole life and would like to be a part of its future," he said.
