In what some might say was a rematch of sorts, the Douglas High wrestling team exacted a little revenge on Bishop Manogue in a league dual Wednesday night in Reno.
Manogue crushed Douglas on the gridiron earlier in the year at home but could not stop a dominating Douglas wrestling line-up on their home mat.
The Tigers walked away with a 48-27 win, improving to 4-0 in league action.
After a starting match double forfeit at 103 pounds, Douglas 112-pounder Dillon Spates earned the win by forfeit and Douglas was up 6-0. Tim Souza (119) fresh of his first place finish at the Lions' Tournament, followed with a fall over Manogue's Curtis Bright in just under 2 minutes. Douglas 125-pounder Wes Peterson stepped up with a fall of his own over Casey Pilling in under 1:30. Not to be outdone,
Douglas' Michael Sepulveda (130) took all of 1:16 to pin Brennan McNamarra. At this point Douglas led 24-0.
Manogue scored its first match point at 135 when Jarred Santos escaped Nick Prudhomme in the first period. The crowd came alive, but Prudhomme continued the Tiger run with a fall at 2:14. After Nico Barker got the forfeit win at 140, the heart of the Manogue line-up was ready to go.
Manogue sophomore Ricky McDonald(145), 4A State third place as a freshman, faced off with Eddie Kollar and got all he could handle, ending up with an 11-4 decision.
Douglas then inserted senior Joe McDonald at 152 who got the fall in 1:05 over Steven Salerno, stretching Douglas' lead to 42-3.
Douglas senior Justin Freeman was moved up to 160 to face a tenacious Jered Snow. The score was 3-3 late in the third period when Snow got the fall with 20 seconds remaining. Manogue moved Gary Albright to 171 to accommodate Snow, so Douglas matched up with Tyler Cook. Albright recorded the fall at 1:50 to bring the score to 42-15.
Douglas 171 pounder Steve Anderson took on the task of battling Evan Miller at 189 pounds, despite giving up 18 pounds. Anderson fought his way into the second period before Miller got the fall.
Douglas then moved Zach Falanga up to 215 where he got the fastest pin of the night over Seth Roux in 51 seconds.
Douglas sophomore Pat Miller took on Guy Ryan at heavyweight. Miller has come a long way in a short time but Ryan got the fall in the third period.
With the Carson Senators' win over Galena Wednesday night, the table has been set for a showdown in Minden on Jan. 21. Douglas and Carson are both undefeated in league duals. It appears that the longtime rivalry will also hold the key to the Sierra League championship. The Carson dual will also be Senior night for the Tigers as they honor eight seniors.
