Federal firefighters will be burning vegetation south and west of Carson Valley over the next few months.

The Bureau of Land Management will be pile burning in Little Antelope Valley area, northwest of Walker, as weather conditions permit throughout the remaining winter months.

Smoke and flames will be visible at times from Highway 395, as well as from the communities of Walker and Coleville.

The pile burning completes the fuels reduction work begun in 2006 to reduce future wildland fire intensity and increase safety for nearby residents and firefighters. The fuels reduction work also enhances important mule deer habitat.

This weekend, U.S. Forest Service crews plan to conduct fire operations in the lower Kingsbury area.

While their goal was to complete five to 15 acres on Wednesday, there may be more burning going on through the weekend, forest service spokesman Rex Norman said in a statement.

Prescribed burns in the area will be ongoing through the week and possibly the weekend, Norman said.

Residents and travelers can expect to see smoke from prescribed fire project areas.
