A memorial service is 2 p.m. Saturday at the Minden-Douglas Elks Lodge for native Nevadan James Wayne Tilman, 63, who died Jan. 1, 2009, at St. Mary's Hospital in Reno with his family by his side.
Born Jan. 12, 1945, in Ely to James and Amelia Jane Tilman, he served in the U.S. Navy as a torpedoman's mate onboard the USS Bugara during the Vietnam War. He reached the rank of chief before he retired after 20 years of service.
He was a member of Elks Lodge No. 2670 for 21 years and a member of the Sons of the American Revolution for 21 years.
He was preceded in death by his father.
He is survived by wife Shari DeHart Tilman; children Bartina Tilman, Marcella (Erik) Tilman Kelliher, Marchetta Tilman, Shari Anne (Nathan) Tilman Medina, Teresa (Brandon) Tilman Murray and James Wayne (Pamela) Tilman II; 12 grandchildren; mother Amelia Jane (John) Tilman Garcia; sisters Sharron (Larry) Tilman Brewer; Barbara Satterfield, Karla Tucker; and brother John and James Marion Tilman.
Arrangements are in the care of Capital City Cremation and Burial Society in Carson City. Donations may be made to the charity of your choice or to the Elks building fund in Gardnerville.
