Laura Winking of Minden won a Points of Light Award for her work with Douglas Animal Welfare Group.

The national award is presented to citizens who "discover their power to make a difference" by the Points of Light Institute, formed in 2007 with the merger of Points of Light Foundation and Hands On Network.

Winking has been a DAWG volunteer since 2001, a year after the nonprofit organization was formed. She was DAWG president for 2008.

As president, she coordinated volunteers who daily help the Douglas County Animal Shelter by walking dogs, taking dogs and cats to area veterinarians, and coordinating dog adoption events.

Current president and DAWG founder Cherie Owen presented Winking with a certificate of acknowledgment from Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons at the organization's January meeting.
