Douglas graduate featured soloist in Carson symphony

The Carson City Symphony will perform 4 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater, in a concert featuring bass trombone soloist Dan Barrett in a performance of Eric Ewazen's "Concerto for Bass Trombone or Tuba and Orchestra."

The symphony, conducted by David Bugli, also will play Felix Mendelssohn's "Hebrides Overture, Fingal's Cave," Robert Schumann's "Symphony No. 1, Spring," and Bugli's new arrangement for orchestra of J.P. Meder's "My Own Waltz."

The program includes pre-concert entertainment in the lobby beginning at 3 p.m. and a meet the soloist concert preview in the Sierra Room at 3:15 p.m.

Barrett is a graduate of Douglas High School. He attended the University of Nevada, Reno, and Brigham Young University, where he received bachelor's and master's degrees. He is currently completing a doctorate at Arizona State University.

Barrett has performed with the Utah Symphony, the Utah Chamber Orchestra, the Boston Brass, and several other professional classical and jazz ensembles. Barrett played trombone with the Carson City Symphony from 1993-98, and has been a soloist with the BYU Philharmonic Orchestra, the BYU Trombone Choir, and the Utah Premiere Brass.

The Carson City Symphony is a community orchestra of about 55 players who perform music from the 15th to 21st centuries. Named Organization of the Year 2004, Carson City Symphony is funded in part by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Tickets are $15 general admission, $12 for seniors, students and symphony association members, and free for children age 16 and younger.
