We have another wonderful photo contest winner for June. The winner is Kathy Port for her photo of a mother robin feeding her young. The runner-up is Merry Muller's Lake Tahoe photo. Once again we had so many wonderful photos and could pick only one winner. Thanks so much for all your great photos. Come see the June calendar pages in the Gardnerville Museum lobby.

Of course, this means that the July photo contest is now open. Photos can be submitted either by e-mail to the address below or in person to the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville by 4 p.m. July 31. If you submit a photo by e-mail, please be sure it is in JPG format.

Aug. 1 is the date you can see all the photo contest winners so far and pre-order your copies of the 2010 calendar. We will have a booth at the annual Taste of the Towns fundraiser where you can view and pre-order as many copies as you would like. If you miss the event, pre-orders will be taken in the museum during operating hours.

Tickets are now on sale for the Taste of the Towns. Get yours soon as we always run out. Tickets are $20 for Douglas County Historical Society members or $25 for non-members. The event will start in the parking lot of the Gardnerville museum at 4 p.m. and run until 9 p.m.

You can taste the wares of the participating food vendors in the parking lot as well as wandering down Main Street to taste the food at the various restaurants on the way. Participating vendors represent Mexican, Italian, sweets, coffee, Basque, pizza, American and smoothies. There are four new restaurants participating this year. Businesses along the way will also serve food and drink.

We also have music for your pleasure and dancing should the mood strike you. Ben Crocker is playing in the parking lot at the museum, the Hot Two are at the JT and Mike Maloney is at Woodette's.

There is a wonderful new memorial in front of the Gardnerville museum. You may have noticed it as you drove by. This is a memorial to all the young people of Douglas County who have passed away before their time. Stop by and spend a moment at the memorial and then sign the guest book in the lobby.

For any questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
