With as many people watching the parade as participating in it, the Glenwood Drive Independence Day Parade makes up for in fun what it lacks in size.
Residents of the mile-long cul-de-sac that runs along the East Fork of the Carson River in Gardnerville decorated a score of lawn tractors, bicycles, scooters and all-terrain vehicles for the fourth annual version of the parade.
Louis and Dorothy Fitzhugh carried the big flag to lead the parade. They are veterans of the event begun by Tracy Clark in 2006.
"I love this," Dorothy Fitzhugh said before the parade, with the flag draped around her.
Chuck and Diane Campbell brought their llamas, Genna and Llouie, to be in the parade.
A Niblick Drive resident, Chuck Campbell said they'd been in parades in Bridgeport and other places, but this was the first time he'd participated in the parade one street over from his.
Residents don't know who will be in the parade until the entries line up at its beginning.
Lorraine Fitzhugh, who watched the parade with her son, Gavin, and dog Clark, said that's part of the fun.
"We don't know ourselves what's going to show up," she said as the parade started up.
