Minden Plaza Merchants host event for City of Refuge

Minden Plaza Merchants will host a community support event for City of Refuge 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Minden Plaza near the intersection of highways 88 and 395 in Minden.

Check out Minden Plaza businesses and buy raffle tickets to win door prizes and a grand prize valued at $200. Country and oldies rock music will be played by the Wild Card band. Hot dogs, lemonade and sweets by Russell's Mercantile will available.

Representatives of City of Refuge will also be at the event. Participants can make a donation to City of Refuge and register for gift baskets or the grand prize. Participating merchants' door prizes and services include the following: Nyona's Studio and Jewelry Box, two gift baskets; Jen's Optical House and James Herzman OD, pair of sunglasses; Pioneer Yarn, baby beanies knit-along for babies; American Family, free VIN windshield engraving; Kid Pix, photo opportunity; Russell's Mercantile, gift basket; M & L Flooring, ice cream social; Edward Jones Investments, ice cream social; and Bohner's Chiropractic, ice cream social.

Trained volunteer cosmetologists will be teaching women going through cancer treatment how to cope with skin changes and hair loss using cosmetics and skin care products donated by the cosmetic industry in partnership with the American Cancer Society.

Each participant will receive a free kit of name brand cosmetics. The next session will be July 13 at Tangles Hair Studio, 1255 Highway 395, Gardnerville, then again on Sept. 21 and Nov. 16.

Sessions will also be at the Carson Valley Medical Center, 1107 Highway 395, at 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 10, Oct. 12 and Dec. 14. Call 782-1656 or 267-5308 to reserve space and a kit.

A free home buyer seminar will be every Thursday, 5:30 to 7 p.m., at First American Title Company, 1673 Lucerne Street, Minden.

The seminar is offered by real estate agent Sheri Wilson and Janet Willson of Nevada Property Mortgage, and will focus on the first time home buyer tax credit of $8,000, the 100 percent USDA loan program, as well as the $25,000 down payment assistant program.

Time will be allowed after the discussions for questions and answers. Light refreshments will be served. Space is limited and reservations are recommended by calling (775) 790-0595 or (775) 450-2657.

The Builders Association of Western Nevada is offering a green building seminar 9 a.m. to noon July 17 at their office, 806 Randell Drive, Carson City.

Participants will learn how to identify the green building movement, recognize trends, will receive practical building tips, learn how to find local products to use and available green building certifications, and will learn how to market green building practices.

Cost is $85 per student and includes refreshments and class materials.
