Summer is just whizzing past and more fun summer events are coming up quickly. Next Thursday, July 16, is another of the Thirsty Thursday Wine Walks. These walks take place on downtown Gardnerville's Main Street and go from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Appropriately, the theme this month is red, white and blue. Show up wearing something supporting the theme and you could win a prize. Contact 782-8027 for further information.

Coming up this Saturday is the next in Douglas County Historical Society Swap Meet series. Purchase booth space for only $10 in advance or just head on out Saturday morning to shop till you drop. Call 782-2555 for details on booth purchase. If you need a little more time to get your booth organized, the next swap meet will be on Saturday, July 25.

The biggest event of the summer season happens on Aug. 1. Stop into the Gardnerville museum or call 782-2555 to purchase your tickets to the annual Taste of the Towns. This is the big fundraiser for the historical society and your chance to sample great food, drink and entertainment along our historic Main Street. Tickets are $20 for DCHS members and $25 for non-members and always sell out quickly.

The festivities will start at 2 p.m. Saturday with a showing of "Chicken Every Sunday" at the Gardnerville museum. Admission will be free for all students with an adult and seniors as this is Student-Senior Day for August. Allow about two hours for viewing this fun movie starring Dan Dailey and Celeste Holm and filmed right here in Carson Valley.

After the movie, step out into the parking lot and start your Taste of the Towns. There will be food and beverage venues in the parking lot as well as businesses and restaurants open along Main Street. Several places will also feature live music. Many of the shops will be offering hors d'oeuvres and wine.

This will also be your chance to view the 2010 calendar with all the winning photos you have submitted. We will be in the parking lot showing off the new calendar and taking pre-orders for your copies. No money needed right now, but plan on reserving the number of copies you will need. We'll have them in the Main Street Bookstore in time for Christmas giving.

Don't forget the July photo contest. Your winning photos will need to be in to the Gardnerville museum or at the e-mail address below by 4 p.m. July 31. We'll try to have the winning photo on display at the Taste of the Towns along with the rest of the 2010 calendar.

For any questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
