Deputies have taken at least two reports of Valley residents being telephoned and told they had to come up with bail money.
A Wildhorse woman said a man claiming to be an attorney told her her grandson rented a car in Canada and was in a wreck. He said the grandson was arrested for driving under the influence, but the attorney had worked a deal the lad wouldn't have a record if she paid his fine of $3,000.
Grandma was suspicious when the "attorney" couldn't say what her grandson's name. After hanging up, she checked on the boy, who was safe at home.
A Gardnerville man reported getting a call on Monday from someone who said he needed to send bail money.
Deputies said this scam has become increasingly common.
