Taste of Towns coming up

The correct time for the Taste of the Towns is 5 p.m. Aug. 1. The time reported in last week's column was incorrect. You have my apologies.

That means that those of you who opt to come to the museum early to watch "Chicken Every Sunday" will have extra time to look around the museum at the exhibits. Don't miss the updated Washoe Room and the tribute to Douglas High School graduates of the past in the changing room. Check out the Main Street Bookstore where DCHS members always get a 10 percent discount.

After seeing all we have to offer, go to the parking lot where there will be several food and beverage vendors, as well as the usual stops up and down Main Street. Margarita Man might be a good place to start your taste tour or maybe a cool fruit smoothie from Keva Juice or a cookie from Grace and Ida's Custom Cookies.

Don't have your Taste of the Towns ticket yet? Call 782-2555 or come on in to the museum and get one or two or three or more. Remember, here is where membership in Douglas County Historical Society pays off. Members pay $20 per ticket while non-members pay $25. Membership supports your local museums and gives you a price break at most of our events.

Don't miss the DCHS booth at Taste of the Towns. We will display with a compilation of the winning photos for the 2010 calendar. You can pre-order your copies of the calendar right there. No money needed right now; we're just seeing how many copies to have printed. And again, membership pays off. Calendars will be $10 for non-members and $9 for members.

Our summer swap meets have been very successful. Now is the time to clear out all that "junque" and set up a booth to sell it. Our next swap meet is 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 25. Booth space rents for $10. There is no admission charge for buyers.

The deadline for the July photo contest is 4 p.m. July 31. That will give us about 24 hours to decide on a winner who will be announced at the Taste of the Towns the following evening. If your entries are anywhere near as great as the June entries, that decision will be a really tough one. Your photos this year have been outstanding. Treat yourself to a 2010 calendar so you can enjoy the winners all throughout the year.

For any questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
