When former Gardnerville resident Air Force Airman 1st Class Jennifer L. Koenig steps outside, she is far more likely to run into a bear or moose than an enemy of the United States.
Koenig, the daughter of James Koenig and M.J. Hiltsley, both of Gardnerville, is stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, where she recently participated in "Northern Edge," where more than 9,000 U.S. service members sharpened their skills for responding to crises throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
Koenig is an F-22 avionics specialist with the 90th Aircraft Maintenance Unit.
"I was involved with the avionics systems on the F-22 Raptor," said Koenig, a 2006 Douglas High graduate.
For Koenig, this important exercise provides an opportunity for her unit to better itself in combat situations and in working with other American military services.
"It's important for me because of the great hands-on training I have received here. All of us gain the excellent training and hands-on experience and knowledge offered by Elmendorf," said Koenig.
With Alaska situated between Russia and Canada, and within a good part of the Arctic Circle, the region provides a unique setting for both professional and personal experiences.
"What I have enjoyed the most here are the people and the environment. I work with a lot of good people who are willing to help each other whenever needed. Being in Alaska is amazing. Everything about it is just awesome," said Koenig.
"I've been in the Air Force since August 2008. I haven't been in a war zone yet, but my future plans are to make this a career and retire from the Air Force," said Koenig.
