GARDNERVILLE, Nev.
The Douglas County Historical Society has two busy weekends coming up. This Saturday is the second July swap meet. Booth space is only $10 for the whole day. Hours are 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. If you're a buyer, get there early so you don't miss the best of the bargains.
The end of the July photo contest is July 31. We need your photos showing what you think best exemplifies Douglas County in July. Bring your entries to the Gardnerville museum or e-mail them to the address below. If you e-mail photos, please attach a copy of the photo contest entry form. You can download it from our Web site, www.historicnevada.org. Click on "Calendar of Events" and then click on "Photo Contest Entry Form" in the fourth paragraph down.
While the winning July photo won't appear in this column until Aug. 7, we hope to have it on display at the Taste of the Towns on Saturday, Aug. 1. Stop by our booth in the museum parking lot and pre-order however many copies of the 2010 calendar you wish to purchase. We plan to have the calendars ready for pick up in plenty of time for Christmas giving.
Saturday, Aug. 1, is a busy day indeed. At 2 p.m. we will be screening "Chicken Every Sunday," a delightful movie filmed here in Carson Valley in 1949. This movie was directed by George Seaton who also gave the world the original "Miracle on 34th Street." Admission is free.
Wear your walking shoes so you can go directly from watching the movie and touring the museum to the Taste of the Towns.
At 5 p.m. head straight to the Gardnerville museum parking lot and the start of this year's Taste of the Towns. Tickets are required. Call 782-2555 or stop in to purchase yours. There will be all kinds of food and drink in the parking lot as well as the usual fare up and down Main Street. Even the shops will entice you with hors d'oeuvres and maybe a sip of wine.
Don't miss this outstanding summer event. Yes, it is our biggest fundraiser, but it is your opportunity to taste food from many restaurants in town as well as see the variety of wares in our shops. You won't walk away hungry but you will have a great time. Your ticket dollar goes further as the Douglas-Alpine Chapter of Thrivent Financial is sponsoring us again this year.
Linger after eating and enjoy the music. Ben Crocker will be performing at the museum, Mike Maloney will be at Woodett's and the Hot Two will be at the J.T. Dancing will be encouraged. See you there.
For any questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
