Staff Reports


Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department offers classes for children to seniors. Information and registration at the recreation office, 1327 Waterloo Lane, Gardnerville, or at 782-9828.


Sagebrush Kids sewing camps

Students ages 6-8 learn basic sewing techniques. Beginning sewing camp is 1-5 p.m. Aug. 10-14 and advanced sewing class is 1-5 p.m. Aug. 17-21, both at the recreation annex building. Cost is $150 per camp includes sewing machines and supplies.


Teen, adult sewing classes

Basic sewing techniques taught, 6-8:30 p.m. Aug. 18 and Aug. 25. Cost is $20 per night.

Sewing alterations class teaches hemming, zippers and other sewing tricks, 6-8:30 p.m. Aug. 19 and Aug. 26. Cost is $20 per class.


Bird house pottery

Students ages 7-12 create bird houses of clay, 3:30-5:30 p.m. Aug. 10 and 3:30-4 p.m. Aug. 20 at Felix Pottery. Cost of $32 includes supplies.


Ballet

Students age 3 and older learn ballet and develop concentration, imagination, coordination, self-discipline and confidence. Classes held at World Gym. Call the recreation department for schedule and cost.


Scrapbooking

Bring plenty of photos for a day of scrapbooking with instructor Jackie Gordon, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 15, at Gardnerville Elementary School. Cost is $10.


Ballroom dance

Learn the fundamentals for the fox trot, swing, waltz and Latin dances. Class is 7-8 p.m. Thursdays, Aug. 13-27, at the Dance Workshop in Minden. Cost is $70 per couple.


Beginning painting

Students may choose to work in oil, watercolor or acrylics. Instructor assists each student on how to paint a picture. Students need to provide supplies. Class is 9 a.m. to noon Wednesdays, Aug. 5-26, at the recreation annex building. Cost is $100.


Yoga

Yoga focuses on the body, mind and spirit with concentration on control, stretching and breathing. Class is 9:30-11 a.m. or 7-8:30 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, Aug. 3-31 at the recreation annex building. Bring an exercise mat. Cost, $40.
