Firefighter with heat exhaustion helicoptered to safety

A firefighter working on the Centerville Flats fire above Highway 4 in Alpine County is being helicoptered away from the fire with heat exhaustion.

Firefighters are working a three-acre fire above Highway 4 in Alpine County.

The Centerville Flats fire was first reported 11:16 a.m. in heavy timber above Markleeville.

The fire is burning on U.S. Forest Service land. No structures are threatened.

About three-dozen firefighters comprising two air tankers, a hand crew, a helicopter and two engines are working the blaze.

According to Sierra Front Interagency Fire Center Dispatcher Helen Frazier, the fire is making runs upslope.

Aircraft are flying over the fire as ground units hike or are helicoptered into the scene.

No cause has been announced for the fire. In addition to the forest service, Bureau of Land Management and Alpine County firefighters are working on the fire.
