Sign-ups for the Kids Fishing Derby are being done from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and maybe Thursday at the Lampe Park Pavilion. If you happen to follow the directions in the calendar to go to the Parks & Recreation Building, do a 180 and you'll see them. They won't be conducting training on Saturday, because that's the day of the fishing derby.

More than a half dozen smoke checks were conducted by firefighters on the Sierra Front on Tuesday. There are no major fires in Western Nevada due to this storm. The good thing about lightning is that it provides a big flare where it hits. This low is supposed to stick around through Friday, bring cooler temperatures and a snow level down to 8,000 feet.

Tonight the Minden town board meets at 6 p.m. They'll be working on the Minden street policy and deciding whether to go swimming in the insurance pool.

The Weather Service is betting there will be a 60 percent chance of thundershowers starting at 8 a.m. today and going through the day. Given the last few days there's no reason to doubt it. We had some power bumps on Tuesday and the lightning was hitting pretty close, so be careful outside. If you're caught in a shower get indoors or in a vehicle.
