Man to complete treatment in animal cruelty case

A 24-year-old Gardnerville Ranchos man was sentenced Wednesday to 180 days suspended for one count of cruelty to animals.

Andrew Hamann was ordered to complete an inpatient drug and mental health treatment program and follow up with outpatient care.

East Fork Justice Jim EnEarl told Hamann he may not have animals or be around children without supervision.

EnEarl imposed a $632 fine and 96 hours of community service concurrent to the 30 days Hamann spent in jail.

He is awaiting a bed at Bristlecone Family Resources in Reno.

Hamann turned himself in to authorities April 23, admitting he killed a puppy a year ago and his girlfriend's guinea pigs over the past few months.

He reportedly told investigators killing the animals gave him an adrenaline rush and he was frightened by his behavior.

"Don't do anything to mess this up," EnEarl said. "You've got some issues but much of it came to light because of your seeking treatment."

Hamann also disclosed an addiction to dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant.
